The Gualin Estate
FISHING AND STALKING
Approximately 100 miles north-west of Inverness, between Rhiconich and Durness and just a few miles from Cape Wrath, Gualin Esate comprises some 6,500 acres of ground, seven miles of superb, exclusive, double-bank fishing, a very comfortable lodge that sleeps ten and a flat that sleeps a further two guests.
The lodge, with its unique and spectacular views of Strath Dionard, and the adjoining flat, fishing and stalking are all available for let from the estate. The stalking is both over our own ground and neighbouring estates.
Other activities include hill-walking, sea fishing bird watching and golf.
The accommodation is available without sporting out of season.
FISHING
The Dionard (Djer-nard) is a spate river and benefits from rain. The river is divided into six beats, including Loch Dionard itself, each of which supports a maximum of two rods.
Access to the river is via the track (built in 1989) which serves beats 3 to 6 and about half of beat 2. Access to beat 1 is either by car (which can be left at Rhigolter bridge) or by walking from beat 2.
Each beat has its own very distinct character.
Each fisher is allocated a beat at the start of each week. At the end of each day you then move down one beat. This means that at the end of a week, you will have fished the entire length of the river. Each beat must be vacated by 0200 the following morning - important to remember if you're out indulging in a little late sea-trout fishing.
The entire system is fly only. In common with most highland estates these days, the owners request that fishers behave responsibly over their catch. At the end of the season the estate hopes that at least 70% of fish will have been returned, especially all large hen fish. Therefore we ask for salmon over 7lbs and all Sea Trout to be returned.
STALKING
The estate has its own very good stalking, on some very steep ground with spectacular views. We also have arrangements with neighbouring estates so that, in normal circumstances, stalking can be arranged to suit tenants wishes such that two rifles can be sent out in any given day. Our neighbours ground is less steep but no less dramatic.
Argocats, stalker and ghillie are all provided. Rifles can be provided. You are welcome to bring your own rifle but it must be accompanied by the appropriate documentation.
ACCOMMODATION
The estate has two adjacent properties with spectacular views of Strath Dionard providing warm, comfortable accommodation to its guests. The Lodge is normally let on a self-catering basis with may tenants bringing their own cooks. The Estate housekeeper comes in to clean on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. She also cleans the Lodge from top to bottom on Sundays. Our aim is to be as accommodating as possible of your needs - so if there seems to be something missing from our offering, just ask!
The Lodge was built in 1833 as one of the few Inns in the area and was originally part of the Duke of Sutherland's estate. It sleeps nine in comfort and ten with a slight squeeze (the fifth bedroom is not large). The flat sleeps two in comfort and there is a sofa bed for a third person if required.
The biggest plus point for the Lodge is its spectacular view to the south-south-east with the magnificent Foinaven range dominating the skyline and the beautiful Strath Dionard running along beside it. The road that used to run in front of the lodge was moved in 1993 and is now some distance behind the lodge making this spot tranquil and profoundly unspoilt.
The flat is ideal for a couple or three friends. There is a good sized twin bedroom with plenty of storage space, a bathroom/toilet and a large main room which doubles as a living room / single bedroom when the single sofa bed is in use. The kitchenette has an electric oven and fridge, ample deep-freeze space is available next door in the 'fish room'. As in the lodge, crockery and cutlery are provided. Finally, the flat has a entrance vestibule which also doubles as a drying room with excellent heater and de-humidifier.
